ABOUT US

Shire Farm, owned by Nigel Blakey, is the home to Ruskington Shire Stud owned and ran by Lucy Blakey and Oliver Chaffey. Lucy and Oliver are both DEFRA approved AI Technicians and Oliver is a qualified Vet working locally with our vets Tower Equine. We work closely with our experienced team to provide a high quality service to all mare and stallion owners. Oliver is on the stud daily and works with Tower Equine to hold scanning days 2-3x a week and provide care for all horses 24/7. Having a vet on site helps with those mares who need a bit more TLC to conceive. We also work closely with our physio, Katie Buncombe of Equiflex Therapy, and our farrier, Garath Schofield, to care for all ours and your horses.

Having such an experienced, qualified and dedicated team enables us to deliver a full and quality service. In 2023 we had over 50 mares on the our books, with many of our own mares due to foal in 2024. As a growing and developing stud our purpose built facilities means horses and staff are kept safe.

FACILITIES

We are very fortunate to have excellent facilities to cater for every horse's needs. Our mix of modern american barn style stabling, outdoor stables and crew yards give us great flexibility in how we can keep your mare. We are able to offer year round turnout in our exercise pen and we have a few spaces for grass livery whilst with us.

Our purpose built stocks room and stocks give us a safe and quiet environment for scanning and insemination work. Our laboratory and equipment allow us to effectively process and assess semen prior to insemination and ensure only the best semen is shipped. We also have a new purpose built dummy mare and collection area.
